About Bernard E. Witkin, Esq.
[Excerpt from http://www.witkin.com] B.E. Witkin's career in the law spanned almost 70 years, included an impressive range of activities, and took place as the law of California was experiencing exponential growth in both size and complexity. In his positions as Supreme Court clerk and Reporter of Decisions, and in his activities as a tireless writer and lecturer, a teacher to experienced judges and to aspiring members of the Bar, and an advocate for legal reform, Mr. Witkin's impact on California's law, and on the law of other states, was enormous. The fact that his treatises have been cited by the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal more than 20,000 times is a lasting tribute to his genius and influence.

Purpose of Bernard E. Witkin, Esq., Award
The Law Library Justice Foundation presents the Bernard E. Witkin, Esq., Award annually to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civic leadership and excellence in the teaching, practice, enactment, or adjudication of the law.

The Witkin Fund is used to purchase books and materials for law practitioners for the San Diego County Public Law Library, in keeping with the life and writings of Bernard E. Witkin, Esq. It is aimed at resources for the practicing bar and the legal community in general, as distinct from the Law Library's other mission, to help pro per litigants. The Witkin Award Dinner is, appropriately enough, the primary fund raiser for the fund since the Witkin Award celebrates members of the legal community and their good works.
